Call for The Perfect Person!

We are in the early stages of planning for spring + summer food truck and general happenings at Garden Variety. While we can't say exactly what we are looking for in this "perfect person", or what exactly their job will entail, we can say this.

We would love to find a super friendly, energetic, outgoing person to help us plan and manage operations this season. If you are the right fit, we will give you full creative freedom to curate the perfect food cart offerings, book events, rent the garden, or basically do anything you think will help make good use of our vacant lot. We are thinking that this would be more of a commission based job, but we are open to any suggestions. Please email heididuffey@gmail.com if this sounds interesting to you.

Chances With Wolves / 2nd Street Fest

August 5th during 2nd Street Fest,  starting loosely around 2PM.

It's been a long time coming, it's Chances With Wolves at Garden Variety.  A darling of a DJ crew from East Village Radio in NYC, CWW plays hauntingly obscure records that take you on an quasi journey through the history of music in it's entirety.  These guys are true diggers. Kennan, my old friend and confidant, is partially responsible for my relentless pursuit of anti-popular music.

This is the first time Chances With Wolves are playing in Philadelphia, so let's give them a warm welcome.

To back up my lofty statements, check out one of their hundreds of amazing podcast/ radio show recordings:

First Friday in the Liberties

We like to combine unlikely things of joy.  Friday May 1st, we'll be the last stop on the Family Fun Scavenger Hunt, participating in the NoLibs First Friday affair, and providing drinks with the Gypsy bar.  While you're there you can enjoy the musical craftsmanship of djs Ginkgo & Frosty.

Night Market May 24th

Summer kicked into full swing with the first NoLibs Night Market.  Every so often we'll bring the noise, and this one was a doozie.  Thanks to our amazing dj's, Lina Luv, Jugo (link to his amazing cafe), Image and Frosty who set it off with a simply delightful blend of underground selections. The Gypsy Bar got us nicely toasted within reach of a hot dog and hand made ice cream.  Cheers to the veteran Dapper Dog crew and the new kid in town, Little Babys.  Ah yeah.

Hibernating

This post is long overdue, so apologies if you have been wondering where we are! Garden Variety is a seasonal operation, so we will re-open when the warm weather returns. We have exciting plans in the works for this season, so stay tuned for announcements.

We are working on a more permanent weather canopy so that we can rent the space for more formal events.

We are in the process of curating the food cart offerings, so please be in touch if you are interested in bringing your cart to the garden.

We are also looking to collaborate with visual/performance artists for murals, installations, events, etc...

Looking forward to growth and joy in our second year on this project!

Frosty's Fries: Authentic Belgian Style

Extra large aged potatoes cut fresh, and twice fried in peanut oil.  We pre-cook our fries and cool them to room temperature, so that orders come out piping hot.  Our revolving sauce menu includes Belgian recipes and American classics such as chili, cheese, gravy, peanut sauce and spicy mayo.

Served in an extra large 'pommes frites' style cone with a miniature fork.

Special: Fries, Sauce, and a drink: $5

Sauces:
Peanut Sauce
Spicy Mayo
Gravy
Chili
Cheese

Bye Bye Birdie

Locally known resident Standard Tap staffer and gifted reiki conduit/artist Amy Bird has returned to her home in London.  We approached her to paint the first official piece in Garden Variety.  Her painting will stand as a memento and departure point for our wall.  Keep a lookout for additions coming soon from two amazing street artists.....

Clueless Network TV Show Gives Away Hot Dogs,

.... and doesn't mention Garden Variety.

But who doesn't love a free hot dog?*  Especially a Dapper Dog, which knocks a flimsy partially wrapped aluminum flanked dollar dog to the curb.  Unless of course it's shot out of a cannon on a 4 wheeler driven by a mascot with a 3 page wrap sheet.

Introducing.... Drum roll please.......
FOO TRUCK

They have tee shirts and business cards and everything.

Due to the size of the truck they will be operating in the garden during dinner hours Monday thru Friday.  As of now they have a tasty menu of 'pocket rolls', an Asian inspired wrap.  I hear that soup will be spooning its way out soon.

So come by and say hi to George and the Foo Team.
