Hibernating

This post is long overdue, so apologies if you have been wondering where we are! Garden Variety is a seasonal operation, so we will re-open when the warm weather returns. We have exciting plans in the works for this season, so stay tuned for announcements.

We are working on a more permanent weather canopy so that we can rent the space for more formal events.

We are in the process of curating the food cart offerings, so please be in touch if you are interested in bringing your cart to the garden.

We are also looking to collaborate with visual/performance artists for murals, installations, events, etc...

Looking forward to growth and joy in our second year on this project!

Bye Bye Birdie

Locally known resident Standard Tap staffer and gifted reiki conduit/artist Amy Bird has returned to her home in London.  We approached her to paint the first official piece in Garden Variety.  Her painting will stand as a memento and departure point for our wall.  Keep a lookout for additions coming soon from two amazing street artists.....

Clueless Network TV Show Gives Away Hot Dogs,

.... and doesn't mention Garden Variety.

But who doesn't love a free hot dog?*  Especially a Dapper Dog, which knocks a flimsy partially wrapped aluminum flanked dollar dog to the curb.  Unless of course it's shot out of a cannon on a 4 wheeler driven by a mascot with a 3 page wrap sheet.

They have tee shirts and business cards and everything.

Due to the size of the truck they will be operating in the garden during dinner hours Monday thru Friday.  As of now they have a tasty menu of 'pocket rolls', an Asian inspired wrap.  I hear that soup will be spooning its way out soon.

So come by and say hi to George and the Foo Team.

We Host Amazing Private Parties

Garden Variety is pleased to offer our space for various events.  We host all kinds of events, and are now booking for fall.  Our rates range from $150 and up, and we can swank it up or slum it down to taste.  For basics the garden comes with around 10 tables, 30 chairs, three canopies (rain), lighting and decent sounding speaker system.  We love our neighbors so we lean towards a mellow atmosphere. Our only real bugaboo is that we don't provide bathrooms.  Lovely Christine from Sculpere Studios (Yoga & Pilates) will unlock her doors for $50, or you can whiz across the street at the Foodery (they love us because our patrons love expensive beer).

Keep in mind that our food carts operate on a somewhat consistent schedule.  Private parties usually happen on weekdays, and in-between cart hours.  This boils down to Mon-Wed anytime, Thursday till 8pm ish, Fridays all day and evening until 9pm, Saturdays between 4 and 9, Sundays after 4pm.

The carts can be integrated with catering and parties are welcome to hang out after carts open up. Which usually means moving tables for them to roll in and get set up.

Sounds fun right?

Better than Wine, Sitar Music in Garden Variety Sat July 16th 7pm -9pm

Hosted By Colours by Padmini, and Garden Variety
Saturday July 16th
7pm-9pm
Garden Variety: 900 N. Second Street Philadelphia, PA 19123

A musical journey in the King Solomon's Song Of Songs,
Sitar guitar and sacred chanting duo-

Navot & Tavor weave together ancient biblical texts, contemporary Israeli compositions and classical Indian music. Reflecting Israel's sparkling new Jewish music scene, they bring the special essence of cultural fusion, creating a magical journey of sacred words and melody. Their chants became milestones in sacred song circles around Isr...ael. Navot's music has been played numerous times on the Israeli radio, and he's been performing extensively throughout Israel; among these performances are the Jerusalem's Film Festival 2009, the Activist Festival 2010 and the coming Time Is Now international peace festival 2011. Tavor has been playing in various musical projects, has been involved in musical interfaith projects in Israel and abroad, and has represented the Jewish faith in the opening ceremony of the Parliament of World's Religions - Melbourne 2009. They both performed on the Israeli television channel 8, and will play in the upcoming Kallah 2011 Jewish Renewal Convention in LA.

Navot and Tavor create mesmerizing chants from the Song of Songs and have developed a deep and profound relationship between Indian music and the Song of Songs."
Rabbi Ruth Gan Kagan, Nava Tehila Jewish Renewal community
Navot and Tavor gave a fine concert in our garden in Jerusalem. The combination of the words of the "Song of Songs" and the evocative tones of the sitar was very memorable"

This Weekend in Garden Variety July 8th-10th

Howdy,
A few temporary changes on the regular schedule this weekend.  The lovely ladies of La Copine have been nominated for a Vendy award (http://streetvendor.org/vendys/philly/finalists) and will NOT be in the garden on Saturday or Sunday.

However, the late night carts (Dapper Dog, Peoples Republic) will be rocking 9-3am.

Sadly, Little Baby's Ice Cream got rained out.  Boo.  Keep a heads up or follow us on twitter to catch a taste.

THIS SUNDAY!!! The SideWalk Sale Extravaganza!!! Hosted by Garden Variety and Victoria Chan / Nomaddicts/ Dirt Work.

Vendors needed.  This is a fun event so minimal or nil fees are needed.
